Softron Media Services today announced that it has started shipping OnTheAir Node and OnTheAir Live for Macintosh.

OnTheAir Node is Softron's next generation playout and ingest engine for the Mac. It has been designed to be an inexpensive, reliable and customizable video server that has an open client-server architecture. OnTheAir Node can be controlled remotely over the network. One client computer in a control room can control multiple OnTheAir Node playout servers located in the machine room.

OnTheAir Live is a playlist manager for Live productions that comes bundled with OnTheAir Node and provides the user interface for adding media and controlling playback. As its name implies, OnTheAir Live has all the features required for Live operations such as Cue mode and A/B roll.

Softron Media Services has also announced that it will soon ship OnTheAir Manager, a scheduling application for OnTheAir Node that will allow users to prepare scheduled programming for output from any of the OnTheAir Nodes installed on the network. OnTheAir Manager will come with a calendar style user interface that will allow for easy programming of your TV station . OnTheAir Manager will be able to handle playout, ingest, Live events, control Character Generators, Video Routers and send GPI triggers.

OnTheAir Node will launch automatically at start up and will resume operation, even after a power loss. it will run on any Intel based Mac equipped with a video card (AJA ,Blackmagic Design or Matrox) installed in the MacPro, Xserve or MacBook Pro. OnTheAir Node is coming with the same playout engine as Softron’s flagship product OnTheAir Video, so with the same reliability OnTheAir Video has proven over the years. OnTheAir Node will not only output video to any of the available video output on the Mac, and allow it to be

controlled remotely, but it will also catalog the available assets in one or more scan folder and it will inform any of the client application (OnTheAir Live or OnTheAir Manager) when a new asset arrives or is deleted. It will also check for validity and compatibility. Information on the clips is provided as XML, making it easy for any other third party application to retrieve the clip's characteristics. (Ex: video codec, audio sample rate, creation date, last modification date, finder label etc.)
OnTheAir Node’s open architecture will allow any third party application as Traffic or Media Asset Management software to control the playout and see the list of available media. OnTheAir Node uses Telnet for its communications meaning that the protocol is a proven and open standard that doesn’t need any special requirements.

“OnTheAir Node solves a problem that many of our customers and our prospective customers have been asking about,” said Mike Skibra, Business Development Manager for Softron Media Services. “How can you control multiple channels of output from anywhere in a Mac network? In the past, you were limited by the number of licenses of OnTheAir Video that you could install on a single MacPro workstation or Xserve. With OnTheAir Node, you can have as many channels as you have video output devices and application licenses – all controllable from anywhere.”

“OnTheAir Node is so flexible that we are working on an application to control it from the iPad” said Pierre Chevalier, Technical Director for Softron Media Services. “This application will be available for all our users from the AppStore and it will be demonstrated on our booth at NAB. Being able to actually “see” the playlist that your server outputs from such a device proves the ease of use and great flexibility of OnTheAir Node for any third party application that is looking for a playout sever.”
OnTheAir Node costs USD 3295 (Euro 2495) and comes bundled with OnTheAir Live. The HD option module costs USD 1495 for HD (Euro 995) and the Logo Overlay module costs USD 1495 (Euro 995.) There is an upgrade path for current OnTheAir Video users to OnTheAir Node for USD 2295 (Euro 1495.) OnTheAir Video users who are using the Scheduling module will receive an updated Scheduling option for use with OnTheAir Node at no charge.
